On this page you will find information about the reimbursement of treatments with your psychologist and your endocrinologist (hormone specialist), and about the reimbursement of sex reassignment surgery (SRS), speech therapy, breast enlargement, and finally, facial feminization surgery (FFS).

At the bottom of this page you will find some important tips that can help you with this process, as well as a handy brochure from Transgender Infopunt that you can download, about getting a hospitalisation insurance.

Reimbursement is possible through different channels:

  • Mandatory: health insurance (‘mutualiteit’)
  • Optional: extra health insurance and/or hospitalisation insurance.

There are many different policies and options and many different providers. Even the mandatory health insurance companies are now present in this segment of the market. Assume that everything can be insured, but that there are other price tags attached, ranging from € 50 to € 400 per month.

1.Psychologist

Reimbursement through your health insurance can be possible, but depends on whether or not the psychologist has the correct nomenclature and whether they have an agreement with your particular health insurance.

  • Cost without refund: ± €50
  • Cost with reimbursement (e.g. CM): €40 with a maximum of 12 sessions.
  • Reimbursement: €10 per session with a maximum of a total of €120

Additional reimbursement through the supplementary insurance depends on the policy and the options you have decided to add.
Waiting time for the patient following an individual trajectory is about 4 to 6 weeks, and can go up to 6 to 9 months when doing the trajectory at UZGent.

Note: the reimbursement is similar in the case of a health insurance company other than CM. Variables here are a slightly higher or lower reimbursement per session and a different number of sessions (e.g. 10 or 20) that can sometimes be extended.

2. Endocrinologist (hormone specialist)

Reimbursement from your health insurance happens the way it does with any other specialist. The eventual price you pay for a consultation is minimal. To get Androcur, you will get a letter from the endocrinologist for your health insurance. They, in turn, will give you a document for the for the pharmacist. With that document, the price of Androcur will be drastically reduced. For Œstrogel, you will also receive a substantial discount through the pharmacy of your health insurance. You will also have to pay less for the blood samples (about € 20).

Cost without refund:

  • Consultation: ± €60
  • Androcur and Œstrogel per month: ? (estimate: €50)
  • Blood sample: ? (Estimated: €50)

Cost with refund:

  • Consultation: € 15
  • Androcur and survey gel per month: €15
  • Blood sample: €20

Estimated reimbursement: €110
Additional reimbursement through your supplementary insurance depends on the policy and the options you have chosen.

The average waiting time for the patient following the individual trajectory is about 8 to 10 weeks, and can go up to 16 to 18 weeks (about 4 months) at UZGent.

Note: It is important to know that the patient usually does not receive their diagnosis and thus the referral letter from the psychologist until after the 5th or 6th session. For some patients, the diagnosis happens faster. The patient can then make an appointment with the endocrinologist immediately, so that the actual waiting time for an individual trajectory can be reduced to just 2 to 3 weeks.

3. SRS/Gender reassignment surgery

In principle, there is no reimbursement from any health insurance for an SRS. Only wound care and medication are reimbursed.

Additional reimbursement through the supplementary insurance depends on the policy and the options you have added.

The patient has to wait about 6 weeks for a consultation and after the decision about 10 weeks before the operation can take place (Houtmeyers, individual trajectory) and up to 4 months for a consultation and after the decision about 8 months before an operation can take place at UZGent.

4. Speech therapy

Reimbursement through your health insurance is possible on one condition, namely that you have visited an ENT (ear, nose, throat) doctor and that you have received a referral letter.

Cost without refund:

  • ENT doctor (one-time): €60
  • Weekly session with the speech therapist (1/2 hour): €25 to €35

Cost with refund:

  • ENT doctor (one-time): €15
  • Weekly session with the speech therapist (1/2 hour): €5
  • Reimbursement: €45 one-time + €20 to €30 per week

Additional reimbursement through the supplementary insurance depends on the policy and the options chosen.

Waiting time for is about 4 weeks for an intake with a speech therapist, and about 2 weeks for the ENT doctor.

5. Breast Enlargement

In principle, there is no reimbursement from any health insurance for breast augmentation. Only wound care and medication will be reimbursed.

However, depending on your health insurance fund, you can ask the doctors providing the treatment to draw up a proper letter of motivation: the health insurance fund will then examine on a case by case basis whether a (partial) reimbursement is still possible.

Additional reimbursement through the supplementary insurance depends on the policy and the options you have decided to add.

The waiting time for the patient is about 3 to 4 weeks before a consultation and another 3 to 4 weeks before surgery.

6. Facial Feminization Surgery (FFS)

In principle, there is no reimbursement from any health insurance for the FFS. Only wound care and medication will be reimbursed.

Additional reimbursement through the supplementary insurance depends on the policy and the options you have decided to add.

The patient has to wait about 2 to 4 weeks for a consultation and another 4 to 6 weeks for the operation.

Important tips for transgenders:

  • Make sure that your medical file, which is centralised with your general practitioner, is also visible to all other doctors. This means that every doctor or care provider can always double-check things if necessary. Your health comes first!
  • Make an appointment at a large office of your health insurance in a large city. Unfortunately, in a village they often do not have the right people with the proper knowledge. Contact them beforehand to talk about your questions, and they will make sure you will get an appointment with someone who can give you answer to all of these questions.
  • Sometimes there is a lot more possible financially than what they tell you in Belgium. A well-prepared woman is worth (at least) two. Do your research, read all of the policies and figure out whether or not you might be better off financially when changing your health insurance, or when opting for additional options in you supplementary insurance.
