Cheek augmentation

For a healthy and youthful appearance.

Cheek augmentation

 What is cheek augmentation?

High cheekbones are seen as a sign of beauty. Just look at women like Angelina Jolie and Kate Moss. As women tend to have fuller cheeks than men, they are seen as a sign of femininity. They radiate health and youth – as you can see in these photos.

Cheek Augmentation for FFS Patients

Some people don’t have high cheekbones, and others may have had high cheekbones in the past but they have become flatter over the years. Whatever the issue, we have a solution: facial feminization surgery. More specifically, cheek augmentation with implants or lipofilling. We enlarge your cheeks to make you look youthful and healthy again.

Implants or fat grafting?

There are two ways to perform cheek augmentation: fat grafting (where fat is taken from another part of your body, usually the abdomen, thighs or hips) or implants (if you don’t have enough fat).

Implants

At 2pass Clinic we use PEEK implants. Dr Bart van de Ven has performed facial feminization surgery on many transgender women. He prefers to use PEEK implants because they provide the best long-term results. This is because PEEK implants are designed to fit the patient’s needs. They are custom made by Avinent, following a CBCT scan. So they always fit perfectly and stay in the right place, and there is no risk of infection.

Medpor implants porous material

Medpor implants have an open structure, which promotes native tissue in-growth. This means that the implant stays in the right place and the risk of encapsulation, displacement or infection is very low.

Fat grafting

If you naturally have enough fat, you can opt for cheek augmentation using fat grafting or lipofilling. In this procedure, liposuction is performed in your abdominal area, thighs or hips. The fat is then injected into your cheeks. 50% of the injected fat will remain in this position permanently. The rest is absorbed by your body. As such, the procedure may need to be repeated after six months so as to achieve the desired result. Lipofilling isn’t suitable for all transwomen. Dr Van de Ven will find the best solution with you.

The benefits of lipofilling

  • A natural result.
  • No scar.
  • Performed under local anaesthesia.
  • Liposuction can give you a feminine silhouette, for example, a narrower waist.

Implants

Cheek augmentation using implants requires surgery. But what does this surgery actually entail?

cheek Augmentation for FFS Patients

Cheek augmentation surgery takes 30 minutes to an hour and takes place under general anaesthesia. If you choose this procedure, you don’t have to worry about scars. The incision is made either in your mouth in the gum above your upper teeth (paranasal implants) or just under the eye lashes (cheek implants). The PEEK implants are shaped according to your preference based on a CT-scan that needs to be made several weeks before surgery. They are fastened using small screws so that they remain firmly in place.

And after your surgery?

The incision in your mouth is closed after surgery using dissolvable stitches – so they will disappear on their own. We recommend that you rinse your mouth with mouthwash two to three times a day. You will be given this mouthwash after your surgery. It helps keep your mouth free of bacteria and heal the wound. The stitches will have completely dissolved after about two weeks.

You will also experience the usual side effects of an operation:

  • Swelling (the first two weeks): to reduce swelling, we recommend sleeping on three pillows so your face is higher than the rest of your body.
  • Temporary numbness.
  • Your cheeks may feel painful and stiff.

FAQs before surgery

Sometimes I get asked to model during a photoshoot. How long should I wait to book one after my FFS?

That is a very difficult one. It depends very much upon your healing and we can’t give you any guarantee about how long it takes before you look good enough for a photoshoot.
It could be 4 months, but it could also be a year. Of course it also depends on the amount of work that has been done.

What does this procedure cost?

If you want you can send us good pictures together with your ideas so we can send you a financial and operative proposal. To receive a proposal, please fill in the proposal request online and pay the proposal fee of 50 euro through Paypal.

Of course you are always welcome for a consultation.

Are all the cheek augmentation contours the same or can the doctor decide on the shape and size?

The doctor can decide on the size and shape of the implant. In 80% of cases the same implant is used, but if indicated other sizes and shapes are used.

FAQs after surgery

What happens with the stitches in my mouth?

They dissolve in 5 – 7 weeks. They don’t have to be removed. If they would still be in your mouth after 7 weeks you can easily remove them just by pulling as they will immediately break.

You still have another question? Feel free to ask! We will answer your question and if generally applicable add it to the FAQ of this page.
